As the economy begins to recover companies are now finding it tougher to recruit employees and also to retain their existing workforce.

The CIPD Autumn 2015 Quarterly Review highlighted these issues, saying that 49% of companies are experiencing difficulties recruiting new employees.

  • “Hard to fill vacancies” are highest in manufacturing and production with 24% of companies struggling.
  • In the last year more companies have stated that they have found it hard to recruit +11.4% compared to last year.

How are employers looking to combat these issues.  Evidence from the report suggests that the older members of the workforce are now being recruited or retained to help combat the problem:

  • 13% of firms are now looking to retain their older workers.
  • 9% of firms are looking to recruit older workers.
  • The growth of over 65s in employment has doubled in the last 10 years.

With older workers becoming more critical to employers it is important to consider how older workers will be looked after to keep them in work. 

Ensure your health and wellbeing policy considers the changing workforce demographic; as more older workers are required to work for longer they will need support to keep them working.  Offering a health cash plan scheme ensures that workers have access to diagnostic treatments, specialist consultants and physiotherapists / osteopaths so that any health concerns can be quickly addressed.   With older workers the longer they are absent from work with a health problem, the more likely it is to end their career therefore the access to faster treatment and diagnosis that a health cash plan can facilitate is an essential part of a company’s employee benefits package.
