We have seen an increase in the number of members claiming for ‘diagnostic procedures’.  As NHS waiting times increase many patients are looking to ‘self-fund’ their diagnosis to speed up treatment.

Paying for specialist consultation appointments and private scans can help get a diagnosis and therefore treatment faster than waiting for NHS appointments.  Whilst waiting for delayed NHS treatment can be a worry, there is also a concern over the unknown costs of the alternative - seeking private treatment.

We have found that specialist consultation fees paid by our members on average cost £180. You would be able to reclaim 50% of these costs through your membership.  In order to see a specialist you will need to ask your GP for a letter of referral.

Following on from a specialist consultation many patients would be referred for diagnostic tests in order to diagnose their condition. Waiting times for diagnostic tests are recommended to be within 6 weeks of referral but with nearly 13,000 people waiting over 6 weeks in May last year many people will see further delays.

It is possible to ‘self-fund’ scans with a one part (single area) scan at Cobalt Imaging centre in Cheltenham costing £250 or Alliance Medical from £199.  If you opt for Gold level membership you could claim back 50% of this cost.  Once a diagnosis has been made the treatment should then begin. 


How to request a private scan:

1)     Discuss the problem of delays with your doctor

2)     Ask to be referred privately to a specialist consultant or referred direct to a scanning facility

3)     Use the letter of referral to book a visit to a consultant or scanning facility.

4)     Obtain a receipt and claim for your scan or specialist consultation (or both).

Self-funding your specialist consultation and diagnostic procedures can be made very affordable through our scheme.
